The Clean Image menu item lets you improve the appearance and
readability of bitonal TIFF images. Click the
toolbar button or right-click the image and select Clean Image...
from the pop-up menu. The ScanFix Image Enhancements dialog box
opens:

From this box, you can choose to execute several different image enhancement functions:
Deskew Paper documents are rarely scanned perfectly straight. If the page is slightly crooked when the scan is made, it can make OCR functions difficult, if not impossible. Deskew automatically straightens crooked scans.
Remove Shading Shaded areas on forms obscure overlying text to the point that OCR is nearly impossible. This function removes the shaded areas of an image while leaving the text intact.
Inverse Text Often OCR cannot recognize white text that is printed on a black background. Use this function to invert this type of text so that it reads as black text on a white background.
Remove Specks Specks are scanning garbage that often show up on scans for varying reasons: smudges, rips, wrinkles, or holes in the original paper document. Use this function to remove random, isolated specks.
Remove Vertical Lines Use this function to remove vertical lines from bounding boxes on forms or other documents to improve OCR accuracy.
Smooth Characters Text in scanned documents does not always scan optimally. Small imperfections in characters can cause OCR to misinterpret a letter or to not recognize it altogether. Use this function to make minor repairs to characters for optimum OCR accuracy.
Click the Fix Image button to fix your image. The cursor changes to an hourglass while the Prizm Viewer is working. After a moment, your cursor will return to normal and your image will be improved.
The fixed image is not saved over the original image. To save the fixed image, click on the menu item Save Image As... and choose Export Image.
NOTE: This feature is only available for the Prizm Viewer with OCR capabilities
The OCR to Clipboard menu item lets you copy a portion of text from a bitonal TIFF image to the clipboard. This text can then be pasted into any document that supports pasting from the clipboard.
To use OCR, you must first mark an area of text on your image by using the Mark
Area tool. To activate this tool, click the
toolbar button or right-click the image and select Mark a Selection
under the Left Mouse Button menu item. Click and drag a rectangle
around the area of the image on which you wish to perform OCR.
Once an area is marked, click the
toolbar button or right-click the image and select OCR to Clipboard
from the pop-up menu. A dialog box opens to inform you that the selected text
is being processed. This process may take a few seconds. When the Prizm Viewer
has finished performing OCR on the text, a second dialog box opens displaying
the extracted text. You then have the option to save this text to the clipboard
or to cancel the operation.
NOTE
While OCR technology has greatly advanced in the past few years, some documents such as low resolution faxes may not provide acceptable OCR results. We recommend that you always use the highest possible resolution in order to receive the best OCR accuracy.
